Penulisan judul sebuah skripsi sering diabaikan oleh mahasiswa/i sehingga berakibat fatal. Jika judul yang diajukan sudah masuk berkas di bagian administrasi atau biro bersangkutan, tentu sulit untuk merubahnya. Adalah tugas Sekretaris Jurusan dan Ketua Jurusan Prodi serta para dosen pembimbing untuk memeriksa hati-hati judul yang sudah disetujui tersebut.
Memang tidak mudah untuk memberi patokan metode penulisan judul skripsi. Setiap fakultas dan universitas masing-masing memberi patokannya tersendiri. Namun, selain beberapa unsur kata yang tidak perlu dimasukkan ke dalam judul skripsi (baca entry saya Unsur Kata yang Tidak Perlu di Judul Skripsi), ada beberapa hal yang patut dipertimbangkan.
Rule 1
Capitalize the first word of a sentence or phrase.
Example:
The Use of Capitalization in Writing Thesis
Rule 2
Capitalize a proper noun.
Example:
SMU Muhammadiyah X
Rule 3
Capitalize a person's title when it precedes the name. Do not capitalize when the title is acting as a description following the name.
Examples:
Chairperson Petrov
Ms. Petrov, the chairperson of the company
President Barrack Obama
Rule 4
Capitalize points of the compass only when they refer to specific regions.
Examples:
The Effect of Marco Polo's Visit to The East
Rule 5
Always capitalize the first and last words of titles of publications regardless of their parts of speech. Capitalize other words within titles, including the short verb forms Is, Are, and Be.
Exception:
Do not capitalize little words within titles such as a, an, the, but, as, if, and, or, nor, or prepositions, regardless of their length.
Examples:
The Day of the Jackal
What Color Is Your Parachute?
A Tale of Two Cities
Rule 6
Capitalize federal or state when used as part of an official agency name or in government documents where these terms represent an official name. If they are being used as general terms, you may use lowercase letters.
Example:
The Ability of Departement Store Employees
Rule 7
Capitalize the names of specific course titles.
Example:
A Comparisan Study between Chemistry and Algebra
Rule 8
Give inverted commas or italicized words when we use another titles of books, films etc.
Examples:
Analysis The Use of Idiomatic Expressions in 'Harian Jurnal Medan' Newspaper or
Analysis The Use of Idiomatic Expressions in Harian Jurnal Medan Newspaper
Dari beberapa literature yang saya baca, metode dan patokan cara penulisan judul ini tidaklah sama di setiap negara termasuk untuk style American dan British English. Namun, yang terpenting Anda konsultasikan dengan dosen pembimbing Anda apakah sudah tepat cara penulisannya.
